    > Pioneer Trail, I-95 interchange dropped from funding list ... March 26/08
A controversial interchange proposed for Interstate 95 at Pioneer Trail is only half gone. Transportation officials on Tuesday unanimously removed the project from a Volusia County Metropolitan Planning Organization priority funding list, but overwhelmingly rejected a call from New Smyrna Beach City Commissioner Lynn Plaskett to also erase it from the 2020 Long Range Transportation Plan. Still, the action essentially kills the project for now. "There is no money and it won't happen anyway," Volusia County Chairman Frank Bruno said.... cont...
    > i-95 Motorcycle wreck leaves rider critical ... March 23/08
A motorcyclist who authorities say rear-ended a sport utility vehicle was rushed to the hospital in critical condition after he was ejected from his bike Saturday on Interstate 95 in Ormond Beach. The motorcycle accident caused a chain-reaction crash involving two other vehicles, but no other injuries were reported. Witnesses told authorities the motorcycle driver, who was not identified, was traveling in the center lane southbound on I-95 near State Road 40 at high speed. The motorcycle "went into pieces everywhere," said Sgt. Jeff Holmes with the Florida Highway Patrol.... cont...
    > Video: Daytona Beach Police Plan For Spring Breakers ... March15/08
With years of spring breaks under their belt, police in Daytona Beach have learned how to handle the influx of college-aged partiers. When spring breakers break the law, they usually do not go to jail. Daytona Beach police use a special events substation, located right on the beach, to enforce the law. Most infractions are minor, but police keep in mind that they are not dealing with hardened criminals.... cont...

    > Port Orange, New Smyrna still at odds over i-95 interchange ... March13/08
With a deciding vote 12 days away, Port Orange and New Smyrna Beach officials met Wednesday, hoping to reach a compromise on whether a Pioneer Trail interchange at Interstate 95 should remain an option but neither side appeared to budge. Port Orange officials said connecting Pioneer Trail to I-95 could diminish congestion at Dunlawton Avenue and the interstate. New Smyrna Beach officials said it's a move that threatens area residents' rural lifestyle.... cont...

    > Video: Spring Break Going Strong Despite Predictions ... March 10/08
The Convention and Visitors Bureau stopped marketing spring break in Daytona Beach six years ago, but the students keep showing up and, despite dire economic predictions, the first week of the college event is going strong. The beaches don't see the numbers of college students they did a decade ago, but the break is off to a healthy start. Beer and alcohol are the things on which a lot of spring breakers spend their money, but beach patrol is making underage students pour it out.... cont...
    > Video: Fewer Bike Week Visitors Blamed On Economy, High Gas Prices... March 9/08
Despite high expectations, bikers and businesses said this year's numbers are down for Bike Week, which ended Sunday. Bikers point to a sluggish economy and high gas prices, and said fewer out-of-town bikers are making the long trek to Volusia County because of it. Vacancy signs were up at many motels in Daytona Beach. Motel owners said they first suspected a weak Bike Week when regular customers failed to make room reservations.... cont...

A motorcyclist traveling the wrong direction along U.S. 1 in New Smyrna Beach died after colliding head-on with two other motorcyclists, marking the third Bike Week death of 2008, authorities said. Two other motorcyclists were reported dead after their motorcycle pulled into the path of a pickup Sunday night on State Road 44 in New Smyrna Beach. Amedeo Revellini, 61, of Daytona Beach was traveling north in a southbound lane of U.S. 1 just before 11 p.m. Saturday when he ran into two southbound motorcyclists near the Isleboro subdivision, New Smyrna Beach police said.... cont...
    > Two motorcyclists killed in I-95 accident in Indian River County... March 1/08
As Bike Week begins in Daytona Beach this weekend, motorists here Friday saw a grim reminder of the need to watch for motorcycles on the road. Two motorcyclists from the Fort Lauderdale area were killed at 12:50 p.m. Friday while they were stopped on the right shoulder of northbound Interstate 95 a few miles north of Indrio Road, said the Florida Highway Patrol. Authorities were waiting Friday night to release the names of the men pending notification of their families. Authorities said a Miami driver in a Saturn crossed both northbound lanes and crashed into the pair, killing both men and tearing one of the motorcycles in half..... cont...
